Nice Season

Yellow flowers of Carolina Jassemine is now full bloom at wooden deck. Full bloom of Double Cherry Blossoms (Yae-sakura) is aloso seen at the public park over the deck. Yae-sakura means 8 layer petal. Literally, its flower is very thick and heavy. So the trees look like drooping their heads. Shakuyaku 芍薬 a kind of Peony in my garden. Botan 牡丹 another kind of Peony is coming soon.

Spring Storm

A rapidly growing low-pressure system has passed by Japan this weekend.
We had lots of rain on Saturday evening, then very strong gust is blowing on Sunday even though Sun shine came back.

Altough Carolina Jassemine or Evening Trumpetflower has begun to bloom their cute yellow flowers, very strong gust has been blowing since early morning.
I crank down my antenna on the roof top.

Morse Tree

I made a Morse Codes Table and a Morse Tree which can be used for both International Morse and Japanese Morse.

Here your are !

As you see, Japanese Morse Code has almost double number of characters than for International Morse Code. Until 1996, we had to master both of them to get the 1st Class Amateur Radio Operator license.
In October, 2011, the Morse Code proficiency has completely deleted from the requirement of all sorts of amateur radio operators license.

Emergency Roll Call Practice

Time flies. 2 years have been passed after the tragedy on 11th March, 2011.
The Great East Japan Earthquake is the worst largest disaster in Japan after the WW II. 15,881 people were killed, 2668 people are still missing.
The number of victims including related death counts over 20,000.
Two years ago, severe shock hit us at 14:46JST. I was in a meeting at the 21st floor of company office in Kawasaki city. The building was swaying heavily from side to side. We all had been clinging to the desk until the swaying comes calm. Few minutes after the first shock we got second shock which is same level of the first one. At that time, I thought this building might be collapsed and we are all going to die. As such, I felt the fear of death.

After two years passed, reconstruction of damaged cities and towns are still far away from expectation and also the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima is still in critical situation.

In order to keep these things in our mind and to prepare for the emergency

time, A1 Club has started the Emergency Roll Call (EMG-RC) practice since last year.

Yesterday from 10AM, the 4th EMG-RC was held on 7005KHz mode CW using international Morsecode.

A1 Club headquarter station JO1ZZZ controlled the roll-call.

The condition of participants is simple. They must use portable power source instead of commercial AC mains power.

So, some use car battery, some use engine generator, some other use just cell batteries, etc.

And many of them worked from outdoor using simple wire antenna, mobile whip, etc.

We remind with each other that it is always important to prepare for emergency time.

Here are the participants list on 2013-3-10 A1C EMG-RC;

Big mistake

In this week, ending of 2012 and begining of 2013, I've noticed that I had made two big mistakes last year. The first one is that: I forgot to apply extension of my station license for fixed-hamradio-station. That license is good through till 2013-01-29. And we must apply its extension at least one month before the expiration date, that was 2012-12-29. I noticed this mistake on 2012-12-30. It was too late!! So, I can QRV on the band with max. power of 200W till 2013-01-29, but after that I can QRV with max power of 50W since my another license for potable-hamradio-station with max. power of 50W is still valid. In order to get high power station license, I must apply from the scratch with expensive application fee. My Tears (T_T) The second mistake is that: I had issued hundreds of QSL card which don't include important information needs for QSL card. That is "RST report". I'm very sorry but if you receive such imcompplete QSL card from me via the buro, please kindly inform me by e-mail or just send it back to me via the buro, then I'll issue new QSL card again. I'm afraid if this a kind of aging effect. Anyway S O R R Y m(_ _)m

Trip to JA6 land with KX3

As I posted before, I got KX3 in late August this year. However, I could not QRV until mid Nov since I must get station lisence revision pernmission from the national authority. The lisencing process in JA is still bureaucratic and old fashioned. We must revise the station lisence everytime when we add or modify own transmitter. Altough some part of process became internet system, if the transmitter is not the type approved one, it takes long time to pass evaluation by TSS, which is the only one company who is allowed to issue certificate for submitting to the national authority. Japanese amateur radio maker register their transmitter as type approved before they start marketing so that the user can revise their station lisence easier without certificate issued by TSS. Anyway, I finally got revised my station lisence in mid Nov. so that I could take my KX3 to the trip to JA6 land last week. Here is everything that I took for my trip: The preparation was OK. But i had no enough time to operate radio during my trip though. Here are set up at hotel in Beppu Spa. I took 9m wire with 4m fishing-rod. So, I extended the fishing rod from the window of 8th floor of the hotel and 4m wire along with the rod and rest of 5m of wire was just dropped from the tip of the rod. I used 5 of 5m long wire for radials. But SWR is not so good even with KX3's internal tuner. (I must consider better way to get good grounding next time) The 2nd day, our room has balconi so that antenna settin was easier. And SWR is low on 7MHz. But I could operate for short time so that I could not work with any station until the time limit that I must pack laggage for departure. It was not so good trip to enjoy amateur radio. But it was very nice trip to spend time with family. I'd like to share some photos during our trip HERE. 73+88

Looking for fall colors

As I was off duty today, I've been to Yamanakako Lake with Kyoko expecting to view colorful maple leaves there. Yamanakako is located about 1000m above sea level so that the temperature is always about 5, 6 deg C lower than my living place in Machida, Tokyo. At Yamanakako, autumn leaves festival has been held from last week till Nov.11. Although most of maple leaves are still green, we found some nice colored trees and enjoyed viewing. Mt.Fuji with white snow on its top viewed clearly over the lake. Along the lake side street, we found nice gallery. There are many attractive calligraphy works written by bamboo brush. One of them inspired my heart.

TS-990 at Tokyo Hamfair 2012:A1 Lab.モールス通信研究所

I've been Tokyo Hamfair 2012 last weekend.
Although I was busy as a staff of A1 Club booth almost all two days, I could seen the brand new Kenwood flagship model TS990 for just a few minutes.
It's front face with full of switches and knobs recalled my childhood memory that I wrote an illustration of front panel of TRIO, former Kenwood, T/R599 line on the desk of elementary school and played with buddy pretending HAM operator.

It's something like an boy who is excited in front of aircraft's cockpit. :-)

See my Japanese blog where I put YouTube link for short video clip that I took.

Golden Week

Golden Week holdays started from April 28, I have 9 consecutive holidays till May 6. The first day has been finished only with chores in my home, such as cleainig rooms, mowing grasses, tec. The second day, we had small BBQ at my yard with Kyoko, Yoko and Taiki. That's it for sencond day. And the third day, I've driven to Hakone by my EV Nissan Leaf. That was the 1st trial with my EV to visit Hakone. Hakone is my favorit place to go for refreshing myself.
WX was not perfect but I could see Mt.Fuji over the green belt.
Mountain cherry blossoms were full in bloom there.
Blossoms are modest with leaves but it seems more natural than typical sakura blossoms in Tokyo or city area.
Mt.Fuji still covered by white snow was seen in the background of maountain cherry.
Here is a view from Onshi-Hakone-Park a kind of imperial park.

YouTube Video Clip

Hummmm, Morse input while juggling!?...
Input by leg... hummm... it's bit pity.
They'd better use left foot (QLF) instead of right foot.
BTW, the straight key used in the video is GHD's Key.

Anyway, I think that this appeals the Morsecode 120%!

The person in charge of this page must be a CW lover...

Good Job Google Japan!

Receiving 7MHz inside EV in parking (ANT outside)
Antenna is extended outside from the EV's window.
The EV is parking, main switch OFF->ON->OFF->ON

Car navigation

Connecting Operator and ask her or him where do we want to go.
Neither need to know precise address nor input and search on the screen.
Just talk to them, then they will search by PC over the phone and set destination on my navigation computer. This kind of service is convenient.
Especially during riving the car.

Trip to Zao, Sagae and Mogami

I visited Zao, Sagae and Mogami river this weekend with wife, daughter and my mother.
We enjoyed 樹氷 "Silver frost" at the Mt.Zao.
The temp was minus 13 deg C. So we could not stand outside so long time.
Enjoyed beautiful scenery from the gondola.

The main purpose of this trip was to spend peaceful time with family but I could not forget about the radio.

I took elecraft K1 and Fishingrod and some wires for antenna.
Here is the antenna set up at the balconi of the hotel in Sagae-city.

Hot spa at the hotel in Sagae was superb.
The outdoor spa was especially nice with white snow around the hot spa.

We also enjoyed river crousing at Mogami river.

Other photos are summarized here.

I also summarized photos of our trip to Okutadami last October here

Reviewing 2011

Reviewing the year 2011,
it was a kind of turning point of my life.

[Jan] Start CW Clumn of CQ Hamradio Magazine
I took charge of monthly CW column of JA CQ Hamradio magazine from 2011-Jan issue till 2011-Dec issue.

[Feb] Sports Club Debut
I became a member of a Sports Club due to my wife and daughter's strong recommendeation.
Although I've been hesitating to go such facility, soon I was hooked.

[March] Natural Disaster & Nuke Accident
On the 11th of March, when the great earthquake attached northern part of Japan
I was in a meeting at 21st floor of my office building in Kawasaki-city near Tokyo about 250km south west from the epicenter.

The 21st floor swayed very much for long senconds after some interval we had bigger shock again.
I've been clinging on the desk and felt this building might be collapsed.
After a couple of minutes (actually may be less but I felt it much longer than some minutes), rolling was stopped.
After that I experienced the wolrd where no electric power, no telephone for long hours.
Only twitter communication through cell phone was barely available.
The most worry was that I could not confirm if my family is safe. (They don't use twitter!)
Since all public transportation means became unavailable and no one knows when the service will be restored.
I decided to go back home on foot.
I left the office around 6PM and arrived at home around mid night.
(The distance between office and home is about 25km or 16miles.)

I've never been experienced such a dark town without lights.
Fortunately my wife and son were safe in the home and listening portable radio with battery.
My daughter who is working at the down town Tokyo and she chould not come back home as it is too far to come back home by foot.
After train transportation restored next morining, She came back home. She cried when she saw my face.

Soon, we noticed that the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Pant had damaged by TSUNAMI. And the situation became worse day by day. And resulted to the worst way as everyone knows.
The radioactive contamination have been continuing since that time and no one knows when it will be stopped and cleared.
It's sure that the problem won't cleared within my life.

[Apr] On the air by Solar Energy
After the March disaster I realized that we have to study about survival skills and should prepare for next disaster.
Japan is geographically located on the most earthquake sensitive place in the planet.
With high possiblity a similar level of huge earthquake will attack near Tokyo anytime.
And we cannot rely on the electricity supplied by electric power company with poor risk management.
As a first trial, I decided to use solar energy for my hobby.
I've been using solar panel and battery to feed power supply to the amateur radio equipment since April.

[May] Turning 50
I turned 50 in May.
I recognize that the aging effects such as ear ringing (tinnitus), eye problem (myodesopsia, presbyopia)
and forget things to do rapidly (amnesia?) are becoming subjective symptoms.
It's sad.

[June] Becoming a member of FOC
Thanks to the kind support of the sponsors, I could become a member of FOC.
For me, FOC was a kind of admiration and final target of my CW oriented ham life.
So, when Bruce, K6ZB sounded about nomination, I said to him "not now".
But Bruce nominated me and kick my back to try the quest.

I was first nominated Bruce, K6ZB and Shin, JA1NUT in last November.
Then, Bert, W5ZR and Jurgen, DJ3KR.
Steave, W7QC also gave me kind intension for sponsoring.
But the G land was quite a big hardle for my small station.
I've been looking for explosion of high band condition.
The high bands have gradually getting better this spring and I was ready to put on a spurt at the end of nomination
period of 6 months.
Unfortunately, the great earthquake on 3.11 made my activitiy almost zero for about one month. I restarted radio mid April but with 100W solar panel and 100AH battery to protest against TEPCO nuke plant problem.
At the end of April, that's almost expiration of the nomination period, band condition on finally 15/17/20 smiles to me.
In the last two weeks of April, I got up around 5AM every morinig and watch the bands carefully just before the time I must go to the office.
Thanks to this efforts, I could worked several G stations and one of them became my final sponsor, Ron GW3YDX.
This 6 months was really exciting quest for me.
I'd like to say thank you again to their continuous support and encouragement on & off the air.

[June] Morse PR SPecial Station
The special event station 8J1MORSE, that commemorates the 220th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Morse and the first successful Morse Code communication across the Atlantic Ocean by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, QRVed from 1st June, 2011 till end of Nov 2011.
Also, this special station is opened for remembering drop of Morsecode proficiency test from all class of amateur radio operators license exam.
For detailes refer to official website http://8j1morse.a1tokai.net/ and offical blog http://8j1morse.blogspot.com
I planned this project and promoted to CQ Hamradio Magazine and JARL.
This station was operated by members of A1 CLUB http://a1club.net/ .

[Aug] Performance on TV
In August, a Movie "Let Me In" has been road showed in Japan as title of "MORSE"
I was interviewed by a TV broadcasting co, JOCX TV about MORSE.

[Sep] Issue a Book for Morse Communication
A book for promoting Morse Communication "Hajimeteno Morusu Tsuushin" has been published from CQ Publishing Co. Ltd.
This book is for beginners who don't know Morsecode yet.

[Oct] Death of My Friend
One of my old friend who spent our college student days and at the school rowing club was killed by unexpected accident.
It was shock to us all who spent youth days together.
Remembering him and our sensitive young days, the remaining friends reunioned after long years interval.

[Dec] Introduction of Electric Vehicle
Since my 11-year-old Nissan Tino getting aged and worse in fuel consumption, I decided to change my car.
Considering my life style now and to be, I decided to try an electric vehicle.
Nissan Leaf has come just before new year.

-...-
Thus, lots of things were first time in my life even in this age and I feel it is important to keep basic as stable but keep looking and hearing news widely and do not hesitate to change myself if I believe it is the right way.

Thank you evrything in 2011 and I do hope the coming year will be a healty and happy new year to you and yours!
